THE HAIR OF THE ARTIST, 2012
The title of the work alludes to a structural problem within the art market: the issue of a “fair” monetary valuation of a work of art. How is the value of an art work defined? To what extent do the gender, nationality, and sexuality of the artist play a role? Similar to the performance “Women at Work – Washing Up” (2001), which was performed in a hamman for women, thereby ruling out a male audience and thus a significant proportion of Western art critics, this work takes issue with Western- and male-dominated art history and demonstrates the intrinsic absurdity of giving art a monetary value.
